the fashion statement

My office is one big square and while I am in one corner, half the people I work with are in the other corner. So I am continually taking the long way to the color printer in order to make sure I see people’s faces at least once a day.
Today, I walked in to the room the graphic designers sit in. Lisa, one of the designers I am working with, a lovely Southern woman, is in the corner, wearing a new-looking navy blue t-shirt with a suspicious logo.
“Lisa! And here I thought we were friends… buddies.”
She takes out her headphones.
“I thought we were kindred spirits,” I continue.
“What?” she asks.
“It’s the t-shirt,” the other designer explains to her.
Lisa shrugs.
“You are someone who is on the side of good, not evil,” I plead.
Lisa looks totally confused.
“She just likes the logo,” the other designer explains to me.
“You are from Florida, Lisa, how can you root for the Yankees?”
“Oh, I just went to a game on Saturday,” Lisa says. “I’m still a Braves fan.”
I am satisfied with her answer. That, at least, is something I could respect.

On other fashion statement notes, Zoe (who is coming with me to the game on Friday, since TBF is off on a business trip!) is off to find the new Alyssa Milano Mets shirts. Have you SEEN these things?

I know, all the guys are going to write in salivating. How practical is that to wear to Shea, ever? Or on the 7 train? Come ON. I admit the jeans are cool, though.

A better question would actually be, how practical are those shirts to wear if you need a bra?

I’m really, really, really biased, but the whole Alyssa Milano baseball fashion thing is just ridiculous.  I already think almost all the “women’s clothing” available at most team stores is too ridiculously girly for me to wear—this just makes it even worse.

Or in your case, Deanna, how many days a year could you wear that to Safeco? Although I know you had 80 degree weather last weekend.

BTW, congrats on the almost-no-hitter, it must have been so exciting for you.

I wish I was in the room when they were debating the design and discussing the target customer.
Now that dialogue would make for a great post.

I’m still trying to figure out how one would put on that tank top without accidentally being strangled by one of the gazillion little decorative criss-crossy straps, and why whoever had the final say on the designs thought the gold stripes on the shoulders of the T-Shirt were necessary (it’s actually kind of a cute shirt otherwise, albeit a significantly overpriced one). The jeans are a cool idea, but I’m sure I could buy Mets logo patches and sew them on to a pair of jeans myself.

Hey, everyone. I’m a friend of Zoe’s, and Jessica I was reading your comment here and wanted to make sure you saw my Q&A;with Alyssa that launched the new MLB women’s apparel line of “TOUCH” on MLB.com. It is at:

http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070412&content_id=1894439&vkey=news_mlb&fext;=.jsp&c_id=mlb

Here is what you need to know. The first four questions aren’t actually from my own guy-brain, but courtesy of my 19-year-old son’s girlfriend Amanda, who is a fashion major, Cardinals fan in St. Louis, a clothes horse with a shopping battery on her back, and I thought it was important that someone who is in the target audience for this apparel help get the right perspective. So the question about what fabrics and patterns she used and why comes from Amanda, and so did the one about pricing...the two issues you touched on. Just thought you’d want to know her answers and who asked the questions. I think it’s great that we’re moving in the right direction of designing ballpark apparel specifically for women and designed by women...something Zoe can attest to, since she emailed us last season about finding better women’s duds. And there’s a lot more on the way.

Best wishes this season,

Mark,

That’s great that we got a question from a 19-year old, but how about one from a 34-year-old mom? Or a 26 year old with her first job, who buys a Saturday plan? Or a 40 year old woman who has a ticket plan with her best friend, also female? 19 year olds don’t have the cash to lay out for MLB-priced merch the same way an older demographic does.

I think Alyssa’s clothes are cool and stylish, but four items - one of which is a tank top that is not practical for a woman who sits in the upper deck or takes public transportation to a game - does not come anywhere near to solving the problem. It’s dumb, because you guys are losing so much money from us, and from the men in our lives, and from our friends and relatives who would happily buy us mets stuff. Instead, I have to once again buy a Mens M, which doesn’t fit me at all well, because I want a Delgado t-shirt and all you offer in a woman’s size is David Wright. Please, it’s insulting.

Thanks for posting, though :) I’m still going to give you guys a hard time about it.
