VISITING COOPERSTOWN, PT. 2.

We returned to the Hall, and made our way back to the second floor to continue the chronological exhibit. We moved on to 1930-1970, enjoying the exhibits, learning some things (“I did not know Jason Varitek caught FOUR no-hitters!”), laughing at some others (“I cannot believe they have the pine tar bat!”), and going “OH WOW” more than a few times: (That would be an “oh wow” in case you weren’t sure.) (Regretfully, my photo of the Seaver exhibit turned out blurry – I was checking all the photos after I took them but clearly missed this one. It is hard to photograph here, and I was trying to balance wanting to photograph with wanting to enjoy viewing and sharing the moments and talking with my companion.) Once you’ve gone through the chronology, the next room is for current history, and it’s set up like a clubhouse, with lockers all around the periphery, one for each current team.… [more]

LEGAL OCCUPANCY.

Yes, that is what you think it is. You can see the original Shea Certificate of Occupancy on the Department of Buildings’ website. (And before you ask – we live in a neighborhood where there’s a lot of illegal construction, so we’re always looking things up on the site [every New Yorker should know about DOB BIS] and TBF heard that the MFY’s got their C of O for Yankee Stadium already so he thought he’d see what he could find about the building in Flushing. [Yes, Citi Field has a temporary Certificate of Occupancy.] I realize that there are a grand total of six people who will find this scintillating.… [more]

PREVIEW PT. 2

I’m still writing, so I thought I’d share this one, which caused a whole stream of expletives to ensue: …along the lines of “PERHAPS HE COULD PUT THEM TO GOOD USE AGAIN, LET’S GIVE THEM BACK”.… [more]

WEEKEND PREVIEW.

As part of our extensive visit to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY, this past weekend, we saw a special presentation of some artifacts not on exhibit, including this half of a pair of spikes? I am absolutely the fine readers of MetsGrrl.com can probably guess at who these shoes used to belong to. Full writeup will probably come by Tuesday. There’s, um, kind of a lot to go through.… [more]

SLOUCHING TOWARDS COOPERSTOWN, PT. 1

[Greetings to Readers from Big League Stew on Yahoo!] I started wondering when I would be baseball-savvy enough to appreciate a trip to Cooperstown since around the middle of the 2007 season. It was tentatively on the books for 2008, and I started actively campaigning for this trip in 2009 once we were done with baseball and almost through nursing our heartbreak. At the end of January, I put my foot down, and we picked a weekend. Plans were made. We left on a Saturday morning at 6:30am, heading up 87, and then meandering through rolling snowy countryside. When we pulled into town, TBF promptly made the wrong turn, only for us to then realize that you can’t really get lost, and two turns later, we were on Main Street…where every other store has the word “baseball” in the name or is selling something to do with baseball.… [more]

THERE’S HOPE YET. (UPDATED)

TBF points out that the Authentic Mets team cap in the online store does not have the Dominos logo patch. This much more attractive patch was only supposed to be on merchandise sold at the stadium. It would be typical of the Mets to not say anything, just not use the patch. Or use this patch in equal measure with the Dominos patch. And no matter what, someone will be selling patches on eBay so you could buy a jersey, take off the Dominos patch, and substitute your own (the tailor at your local dry cleaner would be happy to oblige).… [more]

GOING, GOING….

…almost gone: We were coming back from Long Island, and TBF made a comment about this was the route he always used to drive to Shea in his younger days, and we came around the corner and I said, “Hey, I can see the Citi Field sign from here” and then, silence, and then: “I wonder how much of it is left.” “It’s just one more exit.” It was eerie and odd, and yet we were not the only ones slowing our car down (although the only ones getting out of it). Tonight we said goodbye, although we thought we said it once, twice, this was it.… [more]
